I’m back today on the Seven Hills Crafts blog with another Copic-coloured sunset dragon scene card. Some of you may already have seen the sneak peak as I entered this in the MFT Superstar challenge. I have had the MFT Magical Friends stamp set for a while and really wanted to create a sunset flying scene. Think warm, firey colours and dramatic shadows. To get some of the finer details, I finished off the scene with my coloured pencils.
Sunset Dragon Scene Card Tutorial
I started out by stamping the girl flying on the dragon in some Lawn Fawn Jellyfish ink onto some blending cardstock (ClareFontaine DCP 250gsm or Heffy Doodle Alcohol Friendly cardstock are my current go-tos!). I used a die to draw a circle for the sun in the background.
Then it was time for the Copic no-line colouring! As always, I started with the background, focusing in on the sun with some bright yellow markers. I chose some bright reds and oranges for the sky, using plenty of layers to transition from the sun to the sky.
I used some warm greys for the girl and dragon, making sure to keep the deep shadows and reflective light. There are a couple of places I had to had some shadow or light to distinguish parts (her leg, for one example). I brought in my coloured pencils, white, browns, black and some warmer yellows, to sharpen up the image and really give it that reflective glow.
To finish up the sentiment, I used one from the MFT Birthday Buds stamp set. I white heat embossed this onto the bottom right corner, adding some dimension with a very sharp black pencil in the shadow side. This complimented the dark colours of the girl and dragon and tied in the scene together.
A few little white dots for the appearing stars in the background and the scene is finished!
