Storybook Scenes: No Line Colouring (Heffy Doodle DT)

Storybook Scenes: No Line Colouring (Heffy Doodle DT)

I’m back on the Heffy Doodle blog again today with a quick tutorial on creating storybook scenes with alcohol markers, pencils and a little bit of no-line colouring. I’ve gone for an Easter inspired theme today, featuring the Honey Bunny Boo, Wavy Banner Sentiments and Hootiful Stamp sets.

Storybook Scenes Card Tutorial

I started out by planning the layout of the card – something like this requires a little bit of forethought so you get the masking in the right order. I chose a central baby bunny on a stump, with her two parents either side in a woodland scene.

I chose some Lawn Fawn Jellyfish Ink and some Alcohol Marker Friendly Cardstock (the perfect combo for no-line colouring!) and started stamping out the scene. I stamped the bunnies first, masked, then stamped out the stump, then masked. The final part was to add some repeating greenery in the background using the Hootiful branch.

Next came the colouring! The storybook feel is light and airy, though I made sure to keep some definition and contrast in the colours I chose to make up for the lack of a thick, black line in no-line colouring. I keep the shadows very small (this took a lot of restraint!) and made sure the highlight markers covered the majority. I also kept the greens in the background more muted in saturation, with the brighter, more saturated browns of the foreground drawing the eye.

Don’t be afraid to keep the finer details and darker shadows for a second coloured pencil layer. I find it easier to add facial features this way. I also added some dotting details to the floor and some texture to the stump.

The final step was to stamp the ‘Birthday Hugs’ sentiment from the Wavy Banner Sentiments set in some Versafine ink.

This could easily have been an Easter card to celebrate the upcoming holiday!

Have a go and see if you can create a storybook scene.
